CANOAS
Indígenas que construían enormes canoas huecas de una sola pieza hechas de los troncos grandes del árbol apreciaban las Ceibas. Para muchas aldeas en los bosques de las tierras bajas tropicales, estas canos gigantes proveían la única conexión con sus vecinos inmediatos y transportación entre otras islas del Caribe.
El proceso tomaba meses para completar, y la embarcación terminada podía medir entre 2 a 3 metros de ancho y cargar más de 100 pasajeros. La madera es extremadamente liviana y por su susceptibilidad a los insectos y a la descomposición, no es usada para otros tipos de construcción.
CANOES
Ceibas were once prized by indigenous people who constructed enormous, one-piece dugout canoes from the tree’s large trunk. For many villages in the forests of the tropical lowlands, these giant canoes provided the only connection to their immediate neighbors and transportation between the Caribbean islands.
The process took months to complete, and the finished vessel could measure between 2 to 3 meters wide and carry more than 100 passengers. The wood is extremely lightweight and because of susceptibility to insects and decay, it is not used for other kinds of construction.
