LA GRAN CEIBA DE VIEQUES (Ceiba/Silk-cotton/Ceiba pentandra)
La Ceiba es conocida por sus fuertes raíces culturales. La Ceiba fue un gran factor en la vida de los indígenas y es un personaje principal en muchas leyendas y cuentos folklóricos. Este espécimen que mide más de 15 metros de alto empieza como una pequeña semilla hace más de trescientos años, y es uno de los árboles más viejos de la isla.
La Ceiba ocupa un nicho importante en el ecosistema de una selva tropical. Como un árbol emergente, crece a alturas de 50 metros o más para superar las copas de otros árboles de la selva. Su tronco recto es cilíndrico, liso y gris, creciendo más de 3 metros en su diámetro. Su sistema de raíces como pilares puede extenderse sobre 10 metros desde el tronco, dándole apoyo al árbol y almacenando humedad.
La copa en forma de sombrilla es anfitriona a una miríada de criaturas que prosperan en el hábitat soleado. Un laberinto de ramas soporta un sinnúmero de plantas aéreas (epifitas), y provee una autopista natural para animales pequeños. Las ranas se reproducen en el agua que se junta en las bromelias y numerosos nidos de pájaros forman una guardería aérea gigante.
La Ceiba es encontrada por todo el trópico y en diferentes culturas alrededor del Mundo. Ciertos mitos conectan a la Gran Ceiba al origen de los colores, un ancla entre el cielo y el mundo subterráneo, y a la creación de la vida misma.
THE GREAT CEIBA OF VIEQUES (Ceiba/Silk-Cotton/Ceiba Pentandra)
The Ceiba is known because of its strong physical and cultural roots. The Ceiba, pronounced (“sayba”), factored greatly into the lives of indigenous people and is a major character in many folktales and myths. This specimen is over 15 meters tall and began a tiny seedling over 300 years ago. It is one of the oldest trees of Vieques Island.
The Ceiba occupies an important niche in a rainforest’s ecosystem. As an emergent tree, they grow to heights of 50 meters or more to rise above the forest canopy. Straight trunks are cylindrical, smooth, and gray, growing more than 3 meters in diameter. The buttressed root system can extend over 10 meters from the trunk, both supporting the tree and storing moisture.
The umbrella-shaped crown hosts a myriad of creatures that thrive in the sunlight habitat. A maze of branches support aerial plants (epiphytes), and provide a natural highway for small animals. Frogs breed in water that collects in the bromeliads and numerous bird nests from a large aerial nursery.
The Ceiba tree is found throughout the tropics and different cultures around the globe. Certain myths link the Great Ceiba Tree to the origin of colors, the anchor between heaven and the underworld, and the creation of life itself.
